Grand Park in Frisco, TX

Grand Park: Frisco’s Long-Awaited Urban Oasis Moves Closer to Reality

Frisco residents, the dream of Grand Park is finally becoming a reality! After years of anticipation, Grand Park, which has been a topic of local conversation for decades, has officially entered the next phase of development. The Frisco City Council recently approved a master plan and a $4.84 million design services contract to get the ball rolling.

The Design Phase is Underway

During the October 1st council meeting, the approval of both the master plan and the design services contract marked a significant milestone. Mayor Jeff Cheney enthusiastically noted, “Finally,” as the project moves from an idea to a tangible development plan.

Frisco’s Parks and Recreation Director Shannon Coates added, “This funding… is actually so we can get a construction set of documents so that we can start the build of the park.” The design team from Design Workshop Inc., the same firm responsible for earlier renderings, has been tasked with creating the final construction documents.

While residents might have to wait a little longer for construction to start, the plan is to break ground on the project in fall 2025. Until then, regular check-ins and updates on the designs will keep the community informed.

What to Expect in Grand Park’s First Phase

The park is set to be built in multiple phases, with the Civic Park district being the focal point of the first phase of construction. The Civic Park is just one part of the larger Community Hub, a 300-acre section of the park that will include various amenities across five districts: Adventure Play, Botanic Garden and Nature Area, Sports Park, and Nature Center.

Key features planned for Civic Park include:

  • A 7,500-person amphitheater for community events and performances
  • A splash pad for families and children to cool off in the summer heat
  • A climbing structure for adventure seekers
  • Space for food trucks and a picnic pavilion for dining and gatherings
  • A 5-acre pond for water activities
  • An orchard, sculpture garden, and chess and checkers tables for peaceful recreation
  • A boathouse for small watercraft

While these features sound exciting, Coates has advised residents to stay flexible as the final designs could shift slightly during the design process.

Emotional Investment and a Long-Awaited Project

Grand Park has been a highly anticipated project for the Frisco community, especially for local leaders. Mayor Cheney emphasized the emotional investment in Grand Park, stating that the current council has the honor of overseeing the project’s groundbreaking.

Council member Laura Rummel reflected on the park’s long journey, mentioning how she had heard about it since moving to Frisco nearly two decades ago. She joked, “It’s no longer an urban legend… It’s real.”

Located between Main Street and Lewisville Lake, Grand Park is poised to become a massive community destination, integrating both natural and recreational elements. The park’s wide range of amenities will make it a focal point for events, outdoor activities, and family gatherings, enhancing the quality of life for all Frisco residents.

As the design and planning continue, residents can look forward to updates on what’s to come, but one thing is for sure — the long wait for Grand Park is almost over.

Stay tuned for more updates as Grand Park’s design takes shape and brings the community together in new and exciting ways!
